RICHMOND, VA – Today, Senator Lashrecse Aird announced the formation of the Senate District 13 Youth Advisory Council (YAC), a program open to 8-11th grade students that will consist of students from each locality throughout Senate District 13. Members of the YAC will advise Virginia’s leaders about ways to engage other young people, serve as ambassadors for their communities, and organize civic engagement activities for their peers. A scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a member of the YAC who demonstrates leadership above and beyond to their community while on the council. Applications open October 1 and close October 31, 2024 and may be submitted here: https://www.lashrecseaird.com/yacapplication.

Upon announcing the formation of the YAC, Senator Lashrecse Aird (D- Petersburg) said, “My love for serving my community and giving back developed during my middle school and high school years, by teachers and leaders who cared enough to expose me to more than just my classroom experiences. That is why now that I am in a position to do so I am committed to doing the exact same, and am thrilled to announce the formation of the Senate District 13 Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The YAC is an effective way for youth to engage in state government while being provided a platform for their voices to be heard by their policymakers at the state and local level. This is an incredible opportunity for students to represent their community statewide and facilitate continued engagement among our youth.”

While serving in the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates, Lashrecse Aird demonstrated a capacity for pragmatic progressivism – championing education issues, criminal justice reform, reproductive healthcare access, and economic development.  With a willingness to reach across the aisle and work bipartisan to get things done, Senator Aird has a proven track record of legislative successes at the State Capitol.
